Hot Girls Wanted: The Documentary // Relating the Porn Industry to the Modeling Industry

If you haven’t seen this Netflix documentary, I recommend you watch it.

This is a story about five girls and their lives as “pro-amateur” porn stars trying to make it in the business. It starts out as former adult star and agent, Riley Reynolds, picks up a young girl from the airport. Riley runs a porn star agency by the name of “Hussie Models”. He lives in Miami in a 5 bedroom house with the girls. He usually recruits his “hussies” through ads on Craigslist.

We are introduced to Tressa (aka Stella May), Rachel (aka Ava Taylor), Jade (aka Ava Kelly), Karly (aka Lucy Tyler), and newcomer, Michelle (aka Brooklyn Daniels). The girls are between the ages of 18-24 and from all over the US. Mostly from bumfuck nowhere. They all are mostly “teenybopper” porn stars except for Jade who plays a “MILF” at the age of 24.

The “teenyboppers” usually play the role of naive and innocent girls but they are far from it. Tressa is the down-to-earth one, Rachel is the bad-ass bitch, Jade is the motherly one, Karly is the sweet one, and Michelle is…Well, she’s a bit innocent. It’s so interesting to see how their personalities are showcased and compared to their performances. Five girls all so different from each other but becoming like sisters with one another. As you watch the girls, it’s hard to picture them actually doing porn because of how normal they are. But, I guess that’s the thing. Porn stars are just like you and me. Except for the fact that they have sex on camera and get paid for it.

Tressa is from some small town in Texas and has a boyfriend who goes to college in Arlington. He is extremely sweet to her but disapproves of her career choice. Also, upon arriving home, Tressa and her mother have a cringe-worthy talk on camera. Tressa’s mom asks her daughter how she avoids pregnancy and Tessa responds, “Well, they don’t cum in you. Just on you”. The last thing a mother wants to hear. After discussing the STI testing, Tressa’s mother reminds her that she needs to tell her father.

In terms of who I can identify with the most, I would choose Rachel . While smoking a blunt, Rachel goes on with a big speech about how she is so happy to be out of her small town and how her worst fear is ending up boring like her parents. She goes on to say, “I make $900 in 5 hours, why would I go home and make $8.25 an hour?”.She reminds me of me when I was a year or two into modeling. This was my mindset as a 16 year old but it was a little different. I had been thinking to myself, “why go to high school when I’m already out earning my parents now?”

Then, we meet Karly and Jade. Karly speaks of how she doesn’t mind having sex for a living but doesn’t feel she wants to sexually commit herself to a man. As “Lucy Tyler”, Karly tucks in her septum piercing and becomes a sort of pageant girl in lingerie. The closest girl to Karly in the apartment is Jade, the 24 year old Latin beauty. A funny moment is when the two of them are talking about a recent job Karly did with a guy who had a penis the size of “a baby’s arm”. Karly explains that having someone cum in your mouth or anywhere else on your body pays the same but a “creampie” is extra payment. During this conversation, we meet Michelle and learn how to choose a porn name. “Who are your favorite actresses? People in history you like? Days of the week you like?”

I have officially decided that my porn name would be “Wednesday Marie”.

The documentary has a light and playful mood at this point and it almost makes you consider becoming an adult film star. The girls go to a photo shoot with a fairly creepy photographer who teaches them (and the people watching the documentary) how to seduce the camera. This is another scene where you see the personalities come out more. Michelle is a bit self-conscious but excited; Tressa behaves like a typical 18-year-old on set then turns on the confident sex kitten for the camera; and Karly is calm and composed until she gets on camera and becomes “little Lucy”. The girls discuss how empowered they feel knowing that they could be making a not-so-great face but guys will still want to fuck them.

Suddenly, the mood of the doc takes a darker turn. We start to see the behind-the-scenes action and how it really affects the girls. In the scene where Rachel is filming “Virgin Manipulation”, we see the boredom and annoyance in her eyes as the director tells Rachel and her much older co-star how the scene will be shot. The next shot is Rachel and the man having sex and the camera pans over to her displeased face. She goes on to talk about how most of it is “just work” and how porn stars have no real identity. They’re simply there to get someone off so they can go home. Meanwhile, Tressa suffers from a bartholin cyst (which I don’t recommend Googling) and Michelle faces the reality of her job. After her first porn scene, Michelle remarks that she would’ve rather spent her first shoot on a different guy but is happy that he came inside of her because they gave her an extra $100 for a $40 Plan B pill.

The topic of the “Forced Blowjob” comes into play and it is absolutely horrendous. Jade recalls a porn she did called “Latina Abuse” where the camera man degrades her and she partakes in oral sex aimed at making the girl throw up. Rachel has a similar experience in which she becomes terrified and relates it to how rape victims must feel. I know you must be thinking “Well, they don’t HAVE to do that” and I think this is something that is very misconstrued within this documentary. The girls are NOT complaining about these circumstances. They are simply venting yet accepting that it is apart of what they do.

Which leads us to the girls watching an interview of Belle Knox, a young girl who joined the adult industry to pay for her tuition at Duke. The girls watch it and get annoyed. Rachel exclaims, “THIS BITCH, DUDE! She’s 1 in 100,000 other girls doing it. And, just the fact that she goes to Duke.”. It reminds me of models like Gigi Hadid going on to complain that the modeling industry bullies them about being “big” yet lands the VS show. Another model recently spoke out about how it’s not fair because if she was Gigi’s weight, she would’ve been sent home. Jade comments on how Belle must have a good publicist aka has money.

In the end, Tressa outlines her decision on becoming a porn star:

“I could say that in the whole industry, countless girls tried to escape their parents in order to get their freedom like I did by going through porn. Most girls in the industry will say yes to anything. If it had a dollar sign in front of it… sign me up.”

Hot Girls Wanted has not only opened my eyes to the real porn industry but it has shown me how similar it is to the modeling industry. There were so many moments throughout the film that made me say, “oh my god, that reminds me of…” i.e. like living in a house full of young girls with the same aspiration, dicking around like teenagers during the day and then becoming another person on camera. As a model or a porn star, you’re just a face or body. In your career, you get paid extra to push the boundaries i.e. A porn star gets paid extra for a “creampie” and a model gets paid extra for taking her top off. The one thing that I can relate my own blog to the documentary is the fact that we are simply illuminating each industry, showing the good and the bad.

After reading my blog or watching the documentary, you can choose wether or not you are up for either industry. There are pros and cons to every career. Choose wisely.
