An Interview With… Retired Model, Morgan Findlay

My friend from back home in Wisconsin, Mikey DeSouto, introduced me to his roommate a few weeks ago.

Mikey had been asking me about the blog and how it all came to be when he suggested I meet his roommate, another Retired Model. I said sure and started chatting Morgan up over the phone. Little did I know he was way more than just a Retired Model.

I was in for an earful when I asked Morgan to tell me a little bit about himself. It started with being a diver in the New Zealand navy and ended with winning a Division 1 College Rugby National Championship. In between was Calvin Klein underwear model and Aircraft marshall in Antarctica, along with being a waterski instructor in Maine. I mean this guy has literally done it all… Oh, and did I mention he played professional soccer and rugby in New Zealand? And that he chased the rugby dream around the world to England, Canada, Mexico, Milwaukee and now Kansas City where they just won the Championship.

The guy with the resume that can only be printed in Texas (since everything is bigger there) went on to tell me that modeling was never on the agenda, but it ended up paying for his schooling and planted a constant yearning for New York City in his heart.

He was approached while out and about and discovered by the people who would come to be his agency in Montreal. He walked Montreal fashion week and booked a few different underwear gigs out of the gate. Then his greatest achievement in the industry came about: Calvin Klein.

“I’ve been wearing CK since I was 15, to work with them was a huge high for me during that career.”

Abie: One thing that I had to deal with during modeling was choosing between sports and really running full speed ahead with it. I played basketball very poorly in middle school and my agency was upset when my ankles were swollen and it hurt me to walk in heels. What’s your experience with that?

Morgan: Yeah definitely! When I’m playing rugby I’m easily 15 pounds heavier than when I’m not. Ultimately I had to choose. Modeling was great because I got to travel with it and it paid for school; however, being foreign it’s really hard to get a good visa for modeling. They’re really particular about work visas.

Abie: I’m dying to know what your casting attire looked like. Girls wear black skinny jeans, black heels, and a tight tank or tee. What was your casting essential gear?

Morgan: Always a plain dark tee, well-fitted jeans, black briefs and I always wore my Steven Madden boots.

Abie: What’s the most memorable modeling job you booked?

Morgan: One that stands out is the one where I was naked with vegan food all over me. It was for the wall of a new vegan restaurant. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that one.

Abie: That’s painfully hilarious… Do you have any advice for aspiring male models?

Morgan: There is so much work out there and you can use social media to your advantage these days. Go viral, get noticed.

The last thing I asked Morgan about was his fitness regime. Being an athletic person and very physically active (he also worked as a personal trainer in the navy) I knew it had to be good.

You have to do what works for you. You know what works and what doesn’t and you’ll find it sooner than you think. It’s not the same for everyone.”

Currently Morgan holds a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, he’s pursuing his Master’s head-on with hopes to get back to NYC soon.

Oh and by the way, ladies, he’s happily taken by this beauty.
